Why Claude, specifically?
Most AI content treats AI tools as interchangeable. They aren't.

The major AI companies have made meaningfully different choices over the last year about what they will and won't allow their tools to be used for, how they handle user data, how they treat the safety commitments they made earlier in their development, and how they engage with the wider ethical conversation around AI.
Anthropic, the company behind Claude, has consistently chosen the more cautious path. They've turned down significant commercial opportunities that would have required compromising the safety standards they were built on. Before we built the playbook, we did the foundational work for the whole sector.
The IICE AI Code of Practice is the first formal code of practice for AI use in canine professional work. It sets out eight principles that protect dogs, clients, practitioners and the wider profession from the harms that poor AI use can cause. It's grounded in welfare science, force-free values, and the realities of running a small canine business.
It's published, public, and free to read at canineethics.org. You don't have to buy the playbook to access the Code. We wanted the standard to be available to the whole community, paying member or not.
The playbook is how you apply it.
The eight principles, at a glance

1. Professional judgement remains human. AI does not make welfare or behavioural decisions about individual dogs.
​
2. High-risk domains require direct human practice. Aggression, bite history, court reports, vulnerable adults, vet referrals, rehoming. No AI.
​
3. Critical evaluation against welfare science. AI output is a draft. Every piece gets your professional eye on it before use.
​
4. Intellectual honesty and authorship. Your professional work represents your professional thinking.
​
5. Transparency with clients and stakeholders. Be honest about how AI shows up in your work.
​
6. Data protection and confidentiality. Don't enter identifiable client or dog information into AI tools without consent and lawful basis.
​
7. AI does not replace professional development. Read the source. Attend the meeting. Do the reflection.
​
8. Continuous ethical reflection. AI is changing. Your position on it should be reviewed regularly.

The International Institute for Canine Ethics (IICE) exists because the canine sector deserves a professional body that takes welfare, ethics and standards seriously.

We assess our members' professional development and standards every six months. We offer a six-step assessment pathway to ABTC registration. Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to already use AI to get value from this?
​
No. The playbook is written for both AI sceptics and AI users. If you've never opened Claude, we walk you through every step from account setup to advanced features. If you're already using AI, the playbook gives you the ethical framework and the practical setup that most AI users haven't put in place.

Do I have to use Claude? What if I prefer a different AI tool?
​
The IICE AI Code of Practice is tool-agnostic. The principles apply to whatever AI tool you use. The playbook itself is built around Claude because we believe Claude is the most appropriate choice for ethical canine professionals at the time of writing. The principles, the setup logic, and the prompts will translate to other tools, but the specific instructions are written for Claude.

What plan of Claude do I need?
​
We recommend Claude Pro for getting the most out of the playbook. At the time of writing this is around £16 to £20 per month depending on annual or monthly payment. The Free plan will let you try things but doesn't have enough capacity for sustained professional use. Claude is not included in the playbook price. You sign up separately at claude.ai.

Is this hosted online or do I download it?
​
It's hosted as an Online Programme on the IICE platform. You log in to access the modules, complete the practical tasks, and download the companion PDFs. This means we can update the playbook as Claude and the wider AI landscape evolve, and you always have access to the latest version.

How long will it take to work through?
​
Each module is designed for 10 to 25 minutes of reading plus a practical task. The whole playbook can be completed in a focused few hours, or stretched comfortably across bitesize chunks through two to three weeks if you prefer to take it slower.

Will this become outdated quickly?
​
AI does change quickly. Two things mitigate this. First, the Code of Practice is built on principles that don't go out of date. Second, the playbook is structured so the foundational modules (the Code, your practice statement) remain relevant even when specific Claude features change. We update the playbook as needed, and you have lifetime access to the latest version.

What if I don't get value from it?
​

Is this just trying to sell me IICE membership?
​
