Why ABTC Registration Is a Smart Move for IICE Trainers: It’s About More Than Just Prestige

If you’re committed to making a difference in the lives of animals—and we know you are—there’s one step that can elevate your professional profile: joining the Animal Behaviour and Training Council (ABTC) register. If you’ve been working with dogs for a while, chances are you’ve come across the ABTC. Maybe it’s been on your to-do list, somewhere between replying to client messages and scrubbing the smell of liver treats out of your jeans!

Now’s the moment to take action—and here’s why it matters.

What Exactly Is the ABTC?

The Animal Behaviour and Training Council is a UK-based charity and the only body that holds voluntary registers for practitioners who have been independently assessed to meet agreed high standards. It represents the highest level of credibility in our industry.

The ABTC includes over 40 member organisations, from veterinary groups to animal welfare charities, and is recognised by DEFRA and other key government stakeholders. Put simply, it’s where serious, ethical professionals go to stand out.

Why Should IICE Trainers and Behaviour Techs Get Registered?

Here’s what ABTC registration can offer you as a qualified, skilled professional:

1. Professional Recognition That Speaks Volumes

Registration shows clients, colleagues, and veterinary professionals that your work meets the highest standards. You’re not just saying you’re competent; an independent, trusted authority is saying it for you.

2. Increased Visibility (And More Referrals)

The ABTC register is open to the public, so people seeking ethical, evidence-based help can find you easily. And they are looking; our analytics show that many clients actively search for ABTC-registered practitioners or are referred by their vets.

3. Align With a Movement That Matters

The ABTC is working to raise standards across the board in training and behaviour. By registering, you join a nationwide initiative to promote compassionate, science-led approaches. It’s more than a badge, it’s a commitment to better outcomes for animals and their people.

4. Future-Proof Your Career

As the animal care industry moves toward tighter regulation, being ahead of the curve matters. ABTC registrants will already meet the expected standards, while others scramble to catch up.

“I’m Interested—How Do I Join?”

Good news: you can register through IICE.

IICE is a Practitioner Organisation under the ABTC, which means they’re authorised to assess and support your journey to registration. Whether you’re a trainer, technician, or working at the clinical level, there’s a pathway tailored to your role:

  • Dog Trainer? Apply to be a Registered Animal Training Instructor (ATI)

  • Behaviour Technician? Apply to be a Registered Animal Behaviour Technician (ABT)

  • Working at Clinical Level? There’s a route to become a Registered Clinical Animal Behaviourist (CAB)

Final Word: It’s Not Just a Title—It’s a Professional Superpower

ABTC registration is about more than ticking a box—it’s about advancing welfare, applying science ethically, and standing out in a competitive field. It’s a mark of integrity and skill that clients trust and colleagues respect.

So if you’ve been meaning to explore registration, consider this your encouraging nudge to take the next step. The ABTC and your IICE mentors are here to help you navigate the process.
